Canada was chosen specifically as the launch point, because I’m always playing music from every genre when I play a show there,” he says. “Canada, believe it or not, has a more broad idea or scope of what an Akon song actually is, because it’s so international. Video of Akon feat D’Banje Feeling A Nikka 2015 official videoĪkon’s promo tour for the album began earlier this month in Ottawa, and he says starting in America’s neighbour to the north was no accident. He gets help from Nigerian singer-songwriter D’banj on Stadium: World’s “Feeling a Nikka”, which was released alongside a video that is a little more in line with what we’ve come to expect from Akon: the artist drinking in a penthouse suite, surrounded by beautiful women, and driving a Lamborghini. Lyrics like “I am who I am/You are who you are/You wish on a cloud/and I’ll wish on a star” are accompanied by footage of conflict and war interrupted by snippets of sunsets, outer space, and newborn babies. It’s also one of two songs that the artist has released a video for.

“To Each His Own” from Stadium: Pop is like a modern “Kumbaya”, with only an acoustic guitar and piano to back Akon’s voice as he takes a swing at creating an inspirational pop ballad. Packed with dark trap beats, Stadium: Urban’s “Whole Lot” is spattered with the instantly recognizable Auto-Tune that Akon seems to pull off more convincingly than anyone else in the industry, while Stadium: Euro’s “Better” featuring Neko the Kid opens with an Avicii-inspired piano solo and progresses into a dance track that is sure to be on every pre-clubbing playlist. “Just a Man” from Stadium: Island is a laidback track nodding to classic reggae, including a verse from featured artist Stephen Marley. To give fans an idea of what to expect, he’s released five online singles-one from each album. The only thing Akon says about the album’s release date is that it’s “going to be very soon”. Although he doesn’t specify the number of times you’ll have to listen to his album to access all five genres, he does say that there will be an option for more impatient consumers to purchase it instead. “I never want to put my fans in the position where they have to buy the album,” says Akon. Their first choice can be unlocked for free, and, depending on listeners’ engagement with that album, they’ll receive “A-Koins” to use toward purchasing the next one.

Skipping out on services like iTunes and Spotify, he’s worked with developers to create an app that fans can download through his website. His method of releasing Stadium is as outside-the-box as the concept album itself. “Every area and territory all know a different genre from me, and I found myself playing more songs from a particular type of music depending on where I was at.”Īkon credits his scattered but loyal fan base as the reason for the massive release, saying, “I had to create an album that would solidify my fans around the world.” “I created because, ultimately, I realized that I’ve been big in all of these genres in different parts of the world,” says Akon over the phone from New York City. His forthcoming release will be the mother lode of everything Akon: Stadium is a compilation of five albums’ worth of hip-hop, reggae, pop, house, and world music, with a record dedicated to each genre. It’s been seven years since the rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer released a full-length LP, and he’s about to make up for it in a monumental way.
